Flickr censored in Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong and Korea

A recent update on flickr.com causes uproar: as of yesterday users based in Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong or Korea can't turn off their SafeSearch filter. This is effectively censoring flickr.com for users with Yahoo IDs from those countries.

In the last 24 hours a huge wave of outrage sloshed through flickrland. Hundreds of users started to vent their indignation about being censored by posting the picture above tagging it thinkflickrthink, commenting and posting their own protest pictures.

Die Ausstellung Tipitapa en las Zonas Francas ist endlich in Linz zu sehen! Eröffnung ist am Donnerstag, den 22. Juni 2006 um 18 Uhr auf der Johannes Kepler Universität.

The Parkhotel in Ottensheim

On May, 5th Andi Strauss and Gunda Wiesner opened in Ottensheim their Parkhotel for the second summer.

Guests stay in the Parkhotel in one of three adapted wastewater pipes. What sounds a bit spartanic is in fact a very comfortable housing: the concrete pipes are more than two meters in diameter, the double bed in it is more than cosy and the thick concrete walls are cool on hot days and isolate in fresh Austrian summer nights.

After that it will go to to three more cities in Austria and through Germany. Parallelly we'll start the tour in Nicaragua. There will also be one show in New Orleans' Tulane University (Stone Center for Latin American History)

Sonderwirtschaftszone statt Freihandelszone

Die Finanzierung für die Ausstellung über Sonderwirtschaftszonen in Nicaragua ist gesichert. Der Name steht damit auch endgültig fest: "Tipitapa en las Zonas Francas - Bilder, Geschichten, Fakten und Träume aus dem Nicaragua der Sonderwirtschaftszonen".

Der Begriff "Freihandelszone" war zu irreführend. In erster Linie werden damit internationale Handelsabkommen wie zum Beispiel Mercosur oder CAFTA-DR verbunden. Das Wort "Sonderwirtschaftszone" ist zwar ein Ungetüm, beschreibt aber am präzisesten das, worum es in der Ausstellung geht: eine an ein Territorium oder einen Betrieb gebundene steuergesetzliche Ausnahmeregelung.

Granada/Nicaragua. En nuevas pruebas con dos emisores Proxim RangeLAN2 7521 y dos antenas parabólicas 24 dBi en una distancia de 12 km hemos conseguido básicamente los mismos resultados que en 7 km. Vamos a seguir con pruebas de mayor distancia.

La página Low Cost Long Range Wireless Network How-To presenta una solución con el mismo equipo, pero habla de un alcance de solamente 3 millas en terreno "normalo".

Hemos medido entre 368 y 648 kbit/s en un enlace inalámbrico de 7 km por US$ 386

Granada/Nicaragua. En enero de este año me encontré con Phil Hughes, fundador de SSC y director de Linux Journal, en su casa ubicada en la ciudad de Estelí. Había leído en The Linux Gazette de una clase de computación que estaba coordinando junto con la cooperativa Christine King (véase articulo en The Linux Gazette). Quería entrevistarle para conocer sobre sus experiencias con las clases en que enseñan el uso de programas de office y de internet en plataforma Linux a principantes. Regresé con un consejo práctico que no tenía nada que ver con las clases de computación.

Mientras su perro grandote nos obsequiaba mechones de pelo blanco rozando nuestras piernas, hablabamos de las posibilidades de un enlace inalámbrico para la zona de Malacatoya. En esa zona rural que está ubicada a 30km al norte de Granada, donde apenas entra la señal de los teléfonos celulares, no hay línea telefónica fija y el servicio de internet ofrecido por empresas como alphanuméric está a precios como $ 300 mensuales por 512kbit/s nominales. Para ir a la capital del municipio, que es Granada, uno tarda de dos a tres horas en bus, dependiendo del estado del camino no pavimentado.

Phil recomendó dos wireless access points RangeLAN2 7521 de Proxim que tienen una potencia de 500mW con dos antenas parabólicas de 24dBi/2.4 GHz. Los Proxim se venden usados en ebay alrededor de $ 100 por equipo. Fleeman, Anderson & Bird venden 24dBi antenas económicas en $ 56. Sería un total de $ 312, más costos de envío llegó a ser $ 386. Un precio sumamente bajo para un equipo de un alcance de hasta quizas 58 millas (léase comentario "We've done 58 miles" en slashdot.org).

Para una prueba de enlace en el campo nos decidimos por la Laguna de Apoyo cerca de Granada. La distancia entre los bordes de esa caldera volcánica de forma circular mide 7 km. Entre los bordes el terreno cae más profundo de lo necesario para tener libre una zona fresnel (para 7km y 2.4GHz un radius de 15m). Ubicamos los dos puntos de enlace en dos lugares opuestos en los bordes de la caldera: en el mirador de Catarina y en la finca de José Alberto Azveda.

Probamos el enlace con un simple proceso de subir y bajar una imágen JPG de 8MB por FTP. El ancho de banda neto (peso de imágen/tiempo) medido en 4 pruebas oscila entre 368 y 648 kbit/s. Eses resultados son igual a mediciones que hicimos a corta distancia (1m). Son considerables, sin embargo estamos debajo del ancho de banda nominal del equipo que es de 1.6Mbit/s.

Despues de haber resuelto el problema de no alcanzar el ancho de banda nominal emprenderemos nuevas pruebas de más distancia. Léase más aquí.

Las pruebas se hizo el 15 de Noviembre del 2005 como parte de estudios de viabilidad para un proyecto de la Casa de los Tres Mundos, Granada. Equipo en Catarina: Christian Bartak y Tobias Eder, equipo en la finca Azveda: Antony Largaespada y Alexander Barth.

Nicaragua: Wieviel verdient Felix bei einer Fuhre Holz?

Ein Großteil der Herde in Nicaraguas Haushältern werden mit Holz befeuert. Felix Rosales Sanchez (37) verdient wie viele andere im einfachen Viertel Orontes Centeno der nicaraguanischen Stadt Tipitapa seinen Unterhalt mit Transporten, die er mit seinem Pferdewagen unternimmt.

Felix fährt dreimal die Woche mit einem Gehilfen los, um Holz von einem zwei Stunden entfernten Strandstück am Lago de Managua zu holen. Früh morgens um fünf geht die Reise los, den ganzen Vormittag sammeln und schneiden sie Holz, gegen eins kommen sie erschöpft nach Hause zurück.

Bei einer Fahrt kann Felix maximal 60 Bündel Holz mitnehmen. Ein Bündel kann er um 5 Cordoba verkaufen. Eine Fuhre hat also einen Gesamtwert von 300 Cordoba, das sind 18 US-Dollar. Von diesen 18 eingenommenen Dollar bleiben nach Abzug der Gebühr für den Zutritt zum Strand (4,70 Dollar), der Bezahlung für den Gehilfen (1,80 Dollar) und des Proviantes (2,40 Dollar) 9 Dollar und 10 Cent über.

Im Monat ergibt sich so ein Einkommen von 109 Dollar 20 Cent. Der errechnete Monatsbedarf an Lebensmitteln und Artikel des täglichen Bedarfes einer sechsköpfigen Familie in Nicaragua liegt bei zirka 130 Dollar. Felix' Frau Johanna arbeitet in einer Freihandelszone, sie verdient um die 80 US-Dollar im Monat. Zu zweit kommen die beiden also gerade für ihren Lebensunterhalt und den ihrer fünf Kinder auf. Über die Grundversorgung hinausgehende Kosten, wie zum Beispiel für Medizin, Schule oder Reparaturen im Haus, überschreiten schnell das Budget.

Ausstellung: Nicaragua in der Freihandelszone

Das tägliche Leben eines Großteils der Einwohner Nicaraguas ist von Armut geprägt. Außerordentliche Ausgaben neben der unmittelbaren Überlebenssicherung, wie zum Beispiel für Schulsachen, für Krankenversorgung oder für Reparaturen, stellen für viele Familien unüberwindbare finanzielle Hürden dar. Unternehmen, die für den europäischen und nordamerikanischen Markt produzieren, nutzen die missliche Lage des Landes aus und produzieren in steuerfreien „Zona Francas“ zu niedrigen Löhnen. Für Bessergestellte ist das Leben im Mangelzustand nur schwer vorstellbar. Für Betroffene selbst bleibt oft das genaue Ausmaß ihres eigenen sozialen und ökonomischen Kontextes aufgrund der schlechten Informationslage im Unklaren.

NICARAGUA EN LAS ZONAS FRANCAS - NICARAGUA IN DER FREIHANDELSZONE

Um Außenstehende aufzuklären und mit der Lage Vertrauten Zahlen und Fakten an die Hand zu geben, hat die Casa de los Tres Mundos die Ausstellung „Nicaragua en las Zonas Francas - Nicaragua in der Freihandelszone“ konzipiert. Tipitapa ist eine der größten nicaraguanischen Städte, ihre wirtschaftliche Grundlage bilden vier Zona Francas, die sich in ihrer Umgebung angesiedelt haben. Es wird ein persönlicher Einblick in das Leben von fünf Familien Tipitapas gewährt und ihre speziellen Situationen in den größeren sozialen und ökonomischen Kontext Nicaraguas gestellt.
